Belarusian-Georgian bilateral relations

The agreement on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and Georgia was signed and entered into force on January 6, 1994.

On April 22-24, 2015, the President of the Republic of Belarus paid his first official visit to Georgia, during which 16 legal agreements on key issues of bilateral cooperation were signed and a decision was made to open an Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Tbilisi.

In March 2016, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili visited the Republic of Belarus.

In December 2016, during the official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, V.V. Makei, to Georgia, the opening ceremony of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Tbilisi (Ambassador – Mikhail Myatlikov) took place.

 

 

In 2017, official visits to the Republic of Belarus were made by Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili (March 1-2), Georgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikheil Janelidze (September 4-5), and Georgian Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze (November 20-22).

On March 22-23, 2018, the second official visit of the President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, to Georgia took place.

Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus M.I. Rusy took part in the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the First Georgian Democratic Republic, which were held in Tbilisi on May 26, 2018.

Belarus and Georgia maintain intensive bilateral relations at all levels.

Regular political interaction takes place within the framework of annual consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus and Georgia. The parties cooperate constructively within the framework of international organizations.

The National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus maintains contacts with Georgian legislators. Belarusian and Georgian parliamentarians participate in international observation of elections at various levels in Georgia and the Republic of Belarus, respectively. Parliamentary friendship groups have been formed in the Belarusian and Georgian parliaments.

The Belarusian-Georgian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation has been operating since July 2010. The 5th meeting of the Commission was held in Tbilisi on March 21, 2019, and the 6th meeting was held on February 19, 2020.

To strengthen trade and economic ties, an interdepartmental working group on the development of trade and economic cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and Georgia and a Belarusian-Georgian business council have been established.

The legal framework for cooperation with Georgia consists of more than 30 documents, including 3 inter-state, 15 intergovernmental, and 13 interdepartmental agreements.

Among the existing international documents are agreements on the establishment of diplomatic relations, international road transport, the creation of a bilateral Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation, the exchange of information on tax issues, mutual protection of investments, a system for promoting mutual trade, air transport, cooperation in the fields of culture, sports, health care, education, science and technology, the organization of settlements between national banks, mutual travel of citizens, the exchange and protection of classified information, partnership in the field of antitrust law enforcement, cooperation between internal affairs agencies, state security agencies, financial monitoring and control agencies, foreign ministries, ministries of justice, chambers of commerce and industry.

Interregional and twinning relations are maintained within the framework of cooperation agreements between the Minsk region and the Kakheti region, the Mogilev region and Adjara, the Gomel region and the Imereti region, the cities of Minsk and Tbilisi, Brest and Batumi, Mogilev and Batumi, Polotsk and Tskhaltubo, Gomel and Kutaisi, Bobruisk and Batumi, Bobruisk and Kobuleti, Zhodino and Rustavi, Gluboksky District and Telavi Municipality, Svetlogorsk District and Mtskheta Municipality, Kletsky District and Telavi Municipality, Rossonsky District and Lanchkhuti Municipality.
